Inspecting a smartphone: a quality control checklist

by Hede Writing Service

Smartphone quality control inspections are a rapidly growing sector as rising per capita disposable income drives the growing demand for smartphones. While approximately 1.3 billion units of mobile phones were shipped worldwide in 2020, forecasts indicate that this figure will continue to grow by 10.5% annually over the next seven years.

While China remains the largest exporter of mobile phones, with manufacturing bases concentrated around Shenzhen, smartphone production is increasing in Vietnam, India and other countries in South and Southeast Asia.

The top 10 smartphone exporters, by manufacturing market share, are:

  • China: 42.8%
  • Vietnam: 14.3%
  • Mexico: 9.76%
  • South Korea: 9.46%
  • Hong Kong: 4.52%
  • United States: 2.72%
  • Taiwan: 1.87%
  • Japan: 1.45%
  • Singapore: 1.45%
  • Thailand: 1.35%

With such a diverse number of producers, manufacturers and importers must establish a rigorous quality control inspection process for smartphones to maintain quality across all markets.

Perform quality control inspection of smartphones

Mobile phone quality inspection is a rigorous process, which involves several steps. We have included our basic checklist containing the steps that our teams cover when conducting smartphone quality control inspections. The checklist includes the questions that they seek to answer.

1 - Quantity

  • How many items are in the box and how many items should be in the box?

2 - Packaging

  • A visual check to ensure the packaging is marked correctly – checking that the shipping marks and barcode are present and ready for retail sale. Are the mobile phones properly packaged?

3- Manufacturing of the product

  • Does the product conform to the approved specifications of the sample and technical file?

4- Logo, labeling and markings

  • Does the logo resemble the one provided by the client in terms of quality, colors, dimensions, positioning and alignment?
  • Label and marking test
  • Visual check that the barcode is placed on the product

5- Measurement data

  • Does the mobile phone conform to the measurement data specifications in size?

6- Functional and performance tests

a. Software Check – Does the software version used by the mobile phone comply with the product specifications?

b. Basic functional tests of the smartphone will verify:

  • Touchscreen function (if applicable)
  • LCD size and display quality (no dead or pixelated screens)
  • Battery powered
  • Speaker
  • Microphone
  • On/Off option
  • hands-free function
  • Memory
  • smartphone vibration mode
  • external T memory
  • Cameras (take two pictures and save them, then take one picture but don't save it)

<

<

  • When inspecting the mobile phone, operate all functional and adjustable parts of the mobile phone (if any) 20 times to ensure that all respond as expected.

d. Other functional tests for smart devices, as required, will verify:

  • Audio/video functions
  • Call function
  • Micro-USB connectivity
  • Display settings (high/low brightness)
  • Volume +/-
  • And test Wi-Fi function/Internet accessibility
  • Bluetooth function
  • Radio function
  • Checking the NFC function
  • Dual SIM Card Check
  • Checking the application installation function

e. Screen printing test

  • Abrasion test: Using an eraser, rub 30 times to check the quality. For printed content, use 3M adhesive tape, pulling it at a 45-degree angle, to ensure the print remains

f. Load test

  • Does the mobile phone unit charge completely using the adapter, without turning it off at any time during the charging process?

g. HI-POT test for charger

  • Are the settings: 1500VAC , 5mA, with a two second charge for the AC/DC adapter?

h. Checking the battery charger ensures:

  • All necessary custom labels are present and as per customer specifications
  • The plug is compliant with the specific country it is being shipped to (i.e. EU, US, etc.)
  • Works as expected
  • The certificate is provided

i. Reliability test

  • Leave the appliance running for at least four consecutive hours - is the item malfunctioning or overheating?

j. Stress test

  • Is the phone assembly durable enough for everyday use by the end consumer?

k. Frequency control

  • Cell phones can cover many frequency ranges, so are the ranges covered by the mobile device within the customer's specifications?
  • Perform a SIM card and memory card health check

l. Checking the assembly

  • Are the SIM card and memory card in perfect working order?

m. Odor control

  • Is there an unpleasant or chemical odor emitted by the product, accessories or packaging?

n. Antivirus check

  • Make sure the latest antivirus software runs a clean check on the mobile phone.

o. Battery performance test

  • Test the battery capacity with factory equipment or ask the factory to provide the test in accordance

p. Internal manufacturing visual inspection

  • Disassemble the unit, visually check wiring, connectors, soldering, spacing and component integrity
  • Check against foreign materials that may cause potential malfunctions
  • Check critical components according to information provided by customer

7- Manufacturing of the product

Visual inspection of the product

  • Is the product physically ready to ship? Is it clean, does the appearance meet visual specifications?

8- Shipping carton stacking test and drop test *(if applicable)

  • If required by customer, smartphone quality control inspection ensures export cartons are in good condition for shipment:
  • A column of export cartons is stacked to a height of 2.5 m, or as intended to be palletized, for four hours. After the test, the bottom carton must show no compression that would affect the shape of the carton and no damage to the product inside
  • Shipping Carton Drop Test: As part of quality control inspection, the height and drop sequence is performed according to ISTA 1A procedure
